Efficacy of Homoeopathy in Swine-Flu
Dr. Raviaj Pore, M.D. (Hom.)
Swine flu was basically a
respiratory illness found in pigs. It was caused by
infection with swine influenza A virus & was till now
occasionally affects humans.It was first discovered in
1976 in USA.
The swine influenza A (H1N1) virus which has infected
humans in Mexico this time is an altogether new strain
of influenza virus. This new flu strain is a subtype of
influenza A virus with altered protein pattern.
According to the center for disease control & prevention
(CDC), in humans the symptoms of the “2009 Swine flu
H1N1 virus” are similar to those of influenza like
general illness. Symptoms include fever, cough, sore
throat, body-ache, headache, chills & fatigue.
The 2009 outbreak has shown an increased percentage of
patients, reporting diarrhea & vomiting, psychological
lethargy, lack of appetite.
A diagnosis is confirmed by laboratory testing of a
respiratory sample (A simple nose or throat swab).
The presumed patho-physiology indicates that influenza
virus binds through Heamagglutinin on to sialic acid
sugars on the surface of epithelial cells, which is
typically affect the nose, throat & lungs of humans. The
virus is 80-120 nm in diameter.
Complications:
The most common cause of death is respiratory failure or
acute respiratory distress syndrome.
Other causes are:
- Pneumonia (leading to sepsis),
- High fever (leading to neurological problem),
- Dehydration (from excessive vomiting & loose motions)
&
- Electrolyte imbalance.
It is our duty to all of us to take proper care in this
critical epidemic episode to end it as early as possible
for that we should do-
- use face mask/hanky to prevent infection chain.
- Avoid crowded areas or to avoid any type of gathering
that causes crowd which is highly risky to outburst the
swine flu infection.
- Wash your hands properly with reliable disinfectants
after every public contact
- Avoid unnecessary traveling.
- Do proper diet.
- As children & elderly people are more prone to get
infected Quarantine is first & most important measure.
Homoeopathy - a reliable & cost effective treatment &
prevention
In 1917-18 Spanish flu epidemic 50 millions died
worldwide. The mortality rate in allopathic treatment
was 28.2 percent, that time homoeopathic medicines
proved their effectiveness with very low mortality rate
of 1.05 percent, & in some countries Bryonia 30 did very
well& decreased it by 30 percent.
In chikungunia epidemic Homoeopathic medicines found
more useful in treating & preventing it than Allopathic
medicines especially in rural areas.
Gelsemium proved effective clinically in the treatment
of swine flu in France a decade back & has been reported
in the British journal of clinical medicine. Many
Homoeopathic doctors, associations, & institutes came
ahead to give their service & advised to respective
Govt. authorities to treat & prevent this threatening
epidemic.
Maharashtra government has granted 5 Lacks for further
research in swine flu management to Dhondumama Sathe
Homoeopathic Medical College, Pune, Maharashtra.
There is term in Homoeopathy – “Genus epidemicus”, as
homoeopathy is a science based on symptoms similarity.,
In epidemics, there is a common symptom-picture of a
particular area, the appropriate or most suitable
medicine or medicines for this common disease picture is
called as Genus epidemicus.
INFLUENZINUM 200 is most advisable medicine to treat &
prevent this Swine flu epidemic. Some other efficient
Homoeopathic medicines (in alphabetical order) may be
indicated:
1. Aconite;
2. Arsenicum album;
3. Arsenicum iodum;
4. Baptisa;
5. Bryonia alba;
6. Eupatorium per;
7. Gelsemium;
8. Ipecac;
9. Rhus tox;
10. Veratrum album
Depending upon the symptom picture, the above medicines
are effective in Swine flu management.
Along with these some Homoeopath advised Bio-chemic
combinations as Kali mur. & Ferr.phos (both in 12x, 3-4
pills TDS for 2-3 days) as a prophylaxis of swine flu.
