FULL MOON AND HEALTH
Folklore & Observation trends
In every country’s folklore, one finds some stories
related with moon and its impact of health. Most of
these are associated with mental health such as
aggressive behavior or abnormal behavior. But experience
shows that some other conditions also increase or
aggravate during full moon.
Trends observed at OP GP level
If one looks at the Out-Patient practice at General
Practitioner level it is observed that many people
experience an increase in their complaints during the
period of full moon, as compared to the other normal
days. Deductions from these observations suggest that
many diseases and behavior patterns aggravate around
full moon.
Research indicates a relation between health and full
moon
The latest research from Leeds University shows that GPs
in Britain are likely to see 30,000 more patients
immediately after full moon than other normal days.
Various studies have so far shown that addictions and
alcoholism, appetite increase, anxieties, diarrhea or
loose motion episodes, epilepsy, gout attacks, insomnia,
lunacy and mental diseases, menstrual cycles problems
and pains, road accidents, increased and unnatural
sexual activity are influenced by the full moon.
Diet, too, is subjected to a lunar effect, with an 8 per
cent increase reported in average meal sizes on the day
of the full moon, and a 25 per cent hike in drinking
rates.
Probable patho-physiological mechanism
Since the ancient times it has been believed that full
moon has an effect on human and animal health and
behavior. In modern times, it has been proposed that if
the gravitational force of the moon is sufficient to
cause the oceans to rise, it may also affect the glands
and organs. Some people are affected more than others,
it’s suggested, because they are borderline cases that
are tripped over into ill health every month by the
power of the moon.
Another explanation given to understand this full moon
aggravation is because of the changing geomagnetic
fields. 70 percent of the body is made up of water, and
according to biological tide theory, in which moon
exerts a pull on the water within the body, resulting in
a cascade of effects.
Internal body rhythms may also be implicated, as could
the effects on the pineal gland of the light emitted by
the moon or slightly warmer temperature triggered by the
full moon.
Yet another explanation as to why the full moon should
have such an effect is that its small gravitational
effect has an unbalancing effect on pathogens, making
the body more toxic.
Has artificial light affected the full moon
aggravations?
In pre-modern times, prior to the discovery of
artificial light, full moon was an important source of
light during nights that used to affect rhythm and
cycles causing health disturbances at or around full
moon time. But in today’s modern life-style, artificial
light has entered all aspects of our life. It does
affect our bodies as explained in article of artificial
light. Though full moon aggravations are still visible
to a careful observing patient but the degree and
intensity of such aggravations has gone down because of
exposure to lighting on the street, exposure to light
(photo-radiation) from computers and televisions.
Homoeopathy & full moon
It was indeed genius of Dr. Hahnemann to observe such
facts as full moon aggravations more than 200 years ago
what modern scientists are discovering today. In
homoeopathic repertories, the rubric ‘moon aggravates,
full’ finds a place in symptoms relating to chapters of
Mind; Nerves; Vision, Hearing, Female sexual; Urinary
bladder; Skin and Generalities.
The rubric ‘moon aggravation, full’ from complete
repertory, Generals chapter has 53 remedies.
